In an effort to reduce the number of back-to-backs, the 2017-18 regular season will tip off on Oct. 17, commissioner Adam Silver told  K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune . The new start date is roughly 10 days earlier than previous years, with opening night typically occurring at the end of October. The league worked hard to limit the number of back-to-backs over the last couple seasons, with the  average team playing 16.3  this past season - down from 17.8 in 2015-16. The NBA is also working to ensure any team playing in a nationally televised game is coming off at least one day's rest, sources told  ESPN's Zach Lowe . The third time was the charm for Lonzo Ball. After struggling in his NBA Summer League debut, scoring just five points on 2-of-15 shooting, and sitting out a matchup against Kings rookie De'Aaron Fox because of a heavily scrutinized phantom groin injury, Ball broke out for his best game of the summer Wednesday night. In front of LeBron James, who was a spectator for the Lakers' 103-102 comeback win over the 76ers in Las Vegas, Ball led the way with 36 points — going 12 of 22 from the floor, but 3 of 10 from 3-point range. He also had 11 assists and eight rebounds, though did tell ESPN he has to take better care of the ball after turning the ball over six times. Ball said he didn't notice James in the crowd until the second half. Rejoice  NBA  fans, as the new 2017-18 season will tip off 10 days sooner than the last, slated to start on Oct. 17, according to commissioner  Adam Silver , via  Tim Bontemps of the Washington Post . This is the latest of the changes made by The Association along with tan earlier  NBA trade deadline  and the shave in total timeouts in a game, both announced earlier today as team representatives met on Tuesday to discuss these issues. Silver has been aggressive at making these changes and getting the regular season to start earlier will only help ease the burden of back-to-back games and potential four games in five nights for all teams — one that can have a direct result in how and when teams choose to sit out their main players throughout the season.
